Think Tickets Cost Too Much? How About Free?

Members of the South Florida Theatre League in their Get Into Bed With The Arts kick off earlier this year.

Members of the South Florida Theatre League are donating pairs of tickets in a revival of the Free Night of Theater lottery program this summer that encourages people to investigate theaters and/or shows they might not try on their own dime.

Patrons can enter in the lottery for tickets for show being offered between July 15 and August 15 by visiting summerfestfreenight.southfloridatheatre.com. The site lists all the performances that South Florida arts organizations have made available. Select the top three performances that you’d like to see, and enter to win as many as all three pairs of tickets. You can return to edit your entry at any time. (and see if more performances have been offered.

Participating theatres currently include Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre, GableStage, Lake Worth Playhouse, Mad Cat Theatre Company, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, Sol Children Theatre and Storycrafter Studio.

Patrons can enter beginning on June 24, with all entries finalized on July 8. Winners will be notified by email if they have won tickets on July 10. Even if you don’t win any tickets, many theatres may contact you to make other offers.

I’ve always detested this program and never participated while producing. The action cannabilizes existing ticket sales and teaches future ticket buyers that the value of theater is zero. Theaters will do anything to fill seats but this isn’t the way IMO.
