Slow Burn Theatre Company has once again tackled a difficult show in Chess that few if any Florida companies would attempt. And once again, it has come out the victor, at least as victorious as any production can be of this work that divides audiences.
When Fort Lauderdale playwright Tony Finstrom met Florida’s First Lady of Theater Jan McArt three years ago, he felt like he had already “known her forever.” She felt the same camaraderie. It was this initial spark that led to Finstrom’s new musical Glamour Girl! The Jan McArt Story, which will be presented in a staged reading Monday at Lynn University.
Everything about Ruthless! The Musical at Actors Playhouse from dripping furs to the Ethel Merman voices, everything is over the top. Way over the top. Thank goodness. Well, actually, don’t thank goodness. Ruthless is a gleefully uninhibited celebration of greed, venality, ambition and ego. In other words, show business.
Rated P For Parenthood at Actors Playhouse is a 90-minute hoot that bowed off-Broadway last year strings together almost 30 vignettes that chronologically trace the joys and absurdities of raising a child from conception to empty nesting.
