Delayed Carbonells To Be Awarded In Online Gala August 3

The virus-delayed 44th annual Carbonell Awards will be presented August 3, but the usually boisterous “Theater Prom” will be held online and include an acknowledgment of the current tumult about racism in America. The virtual pre-recorded program will be released at 7:30 p.m. on the Carbonell’s Facebook page and through the YouTube channel of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Carbonell Nominees Announced; Dramaworks Shatters Record

Amid a backdrop of changes and challenges, the Carbonell Awards nominations were released Tuesday recognizing excellence in South Florida professional theater. Classics, world premieres marked the list for the April 6 ceremony. Palm Beach Dramaworks not only earned the most nominations of any company – 29 in 16 out of 20 categories – but multiple nominations for every single one of its 2019 productions.

Breaking News: Maltz Theatre Withdraws From Carbonells

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, one of the state’s most artistically and fiscally successful companies, has withdrawn its upcoming shows from consideration for Carbonell Awards for the coming season. The Carbonell board interpreted a brief letter from company to mean that it did not want its past productions from calendar year 2019 to be considered either.

From Carbonells To Theater At Large, Is South Florida Serving Its Hispanic And Black Artists?

This year’s Carbonells with its all-white roster of winners in the performance and directing categories was simply the boiling point in a discussion that has long simmered behind the curtain of South Florida theater. Where all sides seem to agree is that there isn’t a tremendous amount of work being produced by and for black and Hispanic talent, even though, at least in Miami, they constitute a vast majority population.
