At a minimum, Thursday’s opening of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s fresh spin on Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra is a watershed event for the region. But this co-production of GableStage, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Public Theater lays out a put-up-or-shut-up challenge to South Florida audiences and funders: Do you want to become a major theatrical hub?
GableStage is raising money for its January production of Antony and Cleopatra with online crowdsourcing. It seeks $55,000 in pledges through Dec. 21 through Kickstarter.com.
Galen Lambert and Charise Castro Smith, two performers with Miami backgrounds, are among the international cast and creative staff involved in Tarell Alvin McCraney’s production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra touring this winter at GableStage, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Public Theater.
Tarell Alvin McCraney, the Miami-raised playwright who has forged an international reputation, is bringing a new Haitian-flavored adaptation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra to GableStage in January 2014. The American premiere will be sandwiched between its world debut at the Royal Shakespeare Company in November 2013 and its subsequent co-production at The Public Theater in New York City in late January 2014.
