Slow Burn’s Rock Of Ages Isn’t Your Grandma’s Musical

If there’s any way to get folks to the theater who don’t usually go, Slow Burn’s Rock of Ages can do it. Director/choreographer Patrick Fitzwater knows exactly how to squeeze every inch of character out of this cheesy, goo fest of a jukebox musical to entertain aforementioned non-theater types, who can’t wait to re-live the glory days of the 1980s, of which the soundtrack of the show relies.

Miami Native Pursues Theater And Rock Dreams As Lead In Rock of Ages At The Arsht

Is there a better high for a theater artist than to return home starring in a national tour of a hit Broadway show? Ask Miami native Dominique “Dom” Scott. When the Miami native takes the Arsht Center stage Tuesday to play the guitar hero in the spoofy musical Rock of Ages, it’ll be an artistic homecoming as well.

Movie Take On Rock Of Ages Is Enjoyable Goof, But Lacks Energy Of The Stage Musical

The gloriously over-the-top film incarnation of Rock of Ages is just as silly and stupid and surprisingly fun as the Broadway musical it’s drawn from.What the film is missing, and its absence in noticeable, is that ever-present wink in the eye of the musical’s cast as they strutted around the stage. They were in on the joke so you were laughing with them, not at them. It imbued the stage show with an extra frisson of anarchic thumb-nosing joy.

Broadway Across Miami: Priscilla, Memphis, Poppins, Les Miz, Fela, Stomp & Rock of Ages

There’s a distinctly younger, even hipper bent to the offerings for the Broadway Across America 2012-2013 season announced for the Adrienne Arsht Center — plus some old, old reliables. The line-up of only musicals on national tours encompasses Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Memphis, Rock of Ages, Mary Poppins and the 25th anniversary production of Les Miserables for the regular subscription plus added-cost extras of Fela! and Stomp.
