The spotlight was shining brightly on the exceptional achievements of students in high school theater from 28 public and private schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties during the 24th Annual Cappies Awards, hosted by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and South Florida Cappies Inc.

For those who think theater has no future because of the perception that young people have little interest in the art form, witness how the work of literally hundreds upon hundreds of Broward and Palm Beach County high school students has resulted in nominations in the annual Cappies Awards. The local program in its 24th year will give awards next month in 49 categories,

Hundreds upon hundreds of students from Broward and Palm Beach counties cheered loudly enough to rattle the auditorium May 20 at the 23rd awards gala  recognizing achievements in theater and journalism by their classmates from 28 public and private schools in the South Florida Cappies program.

Amid protracted and repeated cheers of a volume rarely heard in the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, hundreds upon hundreds of high school students and their families celebrated the continuing excellence in theater among teenagers in the annual Cappies Award gala Tuesday.

Those who believe that theater is dying would have seen a vibrantly healthy future Tuesday when hundreds upon hundreds of teenagers, their families and friends cheered and screamed their enthusiasm at the South Florida Cappies Gala. The program encouraging theater and criticism among students at 19 schools presented scores of competitive awards at its 20th annual ceremony.

The South Florida Cappies program honoring student achievement in high school theater and criticism, which had to present awards online last year, will return in a live gala celebration at 7 p.m. May 17.

The COVID-19 virus did not rob this high school generation of the chance to honor each other’s work in the South Florida Cappies organization’s slickly-produced online celebration livestreamed Tuesday night in the 18th annual presentation of the awards.

The South Florida Cappies program honoring student achievement in high school theater and criticism managed to finish its season and vote on the awards despite the challenge of COVID-19 that derailed almost all other chapters.
