Actors Playhouse Announces Part Of 2013-2014 Season

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre has announced four of the six shows for the 2013-2014 coming season in Coral Gables.

Oct. 9-Nov. 3: Ruthless The Musical is one of the funniest lampoons of theater and musicals ever written. The four-actress chamber piece (well, often the part of shark of an agent is played in drag) focuses on the cold-blooded rise of a homicidal child bent on stage stardom with a determination that makes Honey BooBoo seem like a slacker. A South Florida perennial, the 1992 show with music by Marvin Laird and book and lyrics by Joel Paley spoofs Gypsy and Mame and movies such as The Bad Seed and All About Eve.

Dec. 4-29:
Making God Laugh is the South Florida premiere of a family comedy by Sean Grennan that takes place at various holidays. Starting in 1980, the newly grown children — – a priest, an aspiring actress, and a former star football player — all return home, where we learn of their plans and dreams as they embark on their adult lives. Their empty nest parents contend with their own changes as old family rituals and dubious recipes are trotted out and ancient tensions flare up over the course of 30 years’ worth of celebrations — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve and Easter.

Jan. 18-Feb. 9, 2014: End of the Rainbow, another regional premiere, looks at the last days of Judy Garland as she struggles through booze and pills and deep fears to complete a club date in London. Critics were underwhelmed by the script, but acknowledged that it gives a stunning bravura role to a performer who can act the hell out of Garland’s downward spiral as well as perform a dozen of her most famous songs.

March 5-30, 2014: Monty Python’s Spamalot, again a first in regional theater in South Florida, is a surprisingly funny romp based on the classic film which includes all the classic lines and scenes but augments them with a witty score.
