New Theatre’s New Season: Two Premieres & Two Edgier Shows But No Shakespeare For Now

New Theatre, which weathered eviction from its Coral Gables home late last year, has announced two world premieres and a late night program as part of its upcoming season at its new home at the Roxy Performing Arts Center. But none is likely to be a work by Shakespeare because of the economic burden of the Bard’s large casts, said Managing Director Eileen Suarez.

You’ve heard of one-act play programs and ten-minute play, but now comes The First South Florida One-Minute Play Festival.

More than 40 playwrights with South Florida connections have written (or are still writing) these very brief exercises in dramaturgy for two benefit performances slated for 4:30 and 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Deering Estate, 16701 SW 72nd Ave. in Miami.

New Theatre’s Chilly Winter Is Family Drama For All Seasons

Robert Caisley’s world premiere script for Winter at New Theatre could use some pruning and the two lead actors could use a bit more stage time to get comfortable with the punishing cascade of dialogue. But neither flaw cripples the three from creating an ultimately harrowing evening of drama under the direction of Ricky J. Martinez as we watch the already fractured family melt down completely.
