14th Annual Cappies Nominations Announced

cappiesThe Critics’ Awards Program, or Cappies for short, will celebrate outstanding achievement in high school theater when students from 26 public and private schools throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties vie for top honors in the 14th Annual Cappies Awards Gala on Tuesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Cappies Awards program will feature songs and scenes from the top-nominated shows and recognize the best in high school theater in 40 categories encompassing awards for performers, designers, technicians and critics.

Top nominees are Stoneman Douglas High School with 18 nominations for its musical production of Shrek and seven for critic reviews. JP Taravella High School leads in the play category with 10 nominations for Hotel Paradiso and four for critic reviews.

Cappie Award winners are determined by votes from students through a weighted peer-review voting process.  Nominations are made by student critics from participating schools who attend productions at rival schools and write reviews, which then are edited by theater educators and published on FloridaTheaterOnStage.com.

Etai Benson and Randi Kleiner, the first ever recipients of the South Florida Cappies for Lead Actor and Actress in a Musical held in 2003, will return to host Gala this year.

Benson is a New York-based actor and a J.P. Taravella High School alumnus. He is best known for a two-year run as Boq in the smash musical Wicked on Broadway, a role he also played in the San Francisco and First National Tour companies. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the Moscow Art Theatre School. Benson worked with legendary director Harold Prince workshopping the upcoming new musical The Band’s Visit.  He was a published critic, performed in the Cappie Award-winning Once Upon a Mattress, Rehearsal for Murder, Singin’ in the Rain and Beauty and the Beast.

Kleiner is the Founder and CEO of SeriesFest, a cutting edge episodic content and television festival held annually in Denver. Kleiner served Cappies as a founding Steering Committee Member. She also was involved in the Cappie-winning productions of Beauty and The Beast, Singin’ in the Rain (Choreography Winner) and Noises Off.

Tickets are $20. They are available online at BrowardCenter.org or, Ticketmaster.com; by phone at (954) 462-0222 or TTD/TTY at (800) 359-2525; in person at Ticketmaster outlets or the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.
