Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in Slow Burn Theatre’s polished production is more than a story about how a teenager evolved into one of the first successful female rock singer/songwriters. For many of us, Beautiful is the soundtrack of our youth, the music a touchstone of the culture of the 1960s and 1970s and a trajectory of American rock music, going from light, teeny-bopper tunes to deeper lyrics.

Beautiful Is Not As Good As Others, But Quite Entertaining If You’ve Haven’t Seen It Before

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical now playing at the Wick Theatre is “so far away” from another local production, but that doesn’t mean the Wick’s edition is not entertaining, or that you shouldn’t go, especially for anyone who has not previously seen it performed elsewhere.

If you’ve got a competent, committed team as the Broadway at LPAC series does for 42nd Street, you’re nearly guaranteed a rousing gift of pure hallelujah as the love of musical theater grows into the triumphantly cresting cakewalk of “Lullaby of Broadway.”

PPTOPA’s Cabaret Once Again Warns Of Current Dangers

PPTOPA’s earnest, merely passable production of Cabaret is notable for a few solid performances, but especially for the script which, decade after decade, becomes an increasingly relevant warning. Even more than the original stories, Masteroff’s 1966 “book” warns of an everyday populace willing to accommodate the rise of a totalitarian regime that promises answers, even to the point of self-inflicted blindness to its dangers.
