Taking Spider-Man‘s place as the mega-musical least likely to open on Broadway is Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to Phantom of the Opera, which, already postponed at least once, will not open this spring as planned.
Mixed reviews and poor word of mouth in the London production, plus Webber’s reported illness, prompted the authors to take this Spruce Goose back into the hangar for more work.
Unfortunately, the original director Jack O’Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell reportedly have bailed. So Lord Andy has announced his intention to open two separate productions in Canada and Australia (presumably with lower production costs than in New York) with different creative teams and choose the best one to bring to Manhattan.
So my question is whether audiences in Toronto and Sydney feel dissed as second-class guinea pigs?
And I’ll still believe Spiderman: Turn Off the Lights When You Leave when I see it.
