Florida theaters are famous for delaying announcing their next season because of protracted negotiations for rights, jockeying to counter-program other theaters, vying to get the rights to the latest Broadway hit and a dozen other reasons.
Not so at Broward Stage Door. The Coral Springs theater has just announced its 2011-2012 season.’ While it promises nothing half as adventurous as the anxiously-awaited Light in the Piazza, opening Feb. 25-Apr. 19, this has been a rugged season for almost every theater’s bottom line ‘ and every show on their schedule is a solidly entertaining work.
In its larger of two theaters, the lineup is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Stephen Sondheim, Sept. 2-Oct. 9; My Fair Lady, Oct. 28-Dec. 4; Annie, Dec. 23-Jan. 29, 2012; Guys and Dolls, featuring one of the best scores and books in the genre, Feb. 17- Mar. 25, 2012, and Little Shop of Horrors Apr. 13-May 20, 2012.
In its more intimate space next door, Lend Me A Tenor, a hilarious farce revived last season on Broadway, Oct. 12-Nov. 13; Irving Berlin’s I Love a Piano, Dec. 2.-Jan. 8; ‘Last of the Red Hot Lovers, classic mid-career Neil Simon, Jan. 27-Mar.4, 2012, and The All Night Strut, a ’30s & ’40s songbook, Mar. 23-Apr. 29.
