Fort Lauderdale company rises to larger space

Rising Action, the Broward County theater that leans toward gay-themed plays, has moved to a larger venue in Fort Lauderdale.

The company took advantage of an expiring lease to move out of an Oakland Park strip shopping center to rent an auditorium and office space from Sunshine Cathedral, the Metropolitan Community Church at 1480 SW 9th Ave. in Ft. Lauderdale. The theater will have the same phone number.

The new space has a stage/altar that the company is renovating to include theatrical lighting and a proscenium. The theater expects to have about 100 seats compared to the 85 in the old space, but there is room for 150 seats if need be, said spokesman Jerry K. Jensen.

Rising Action will open its season there with Nicky Silver’s’Fit To Be Tied from Sept. 24 to Oct. 24. The theater’s cabaret shows will be held at The Manors, 2345 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors.

Rising Action has been scrambling financially and recently sent out a missive to its supporters in the name of its patron saint, Ethel Merman, to pay for the $10,000 cost of the move.
