Frustratingly Short Run For Nilo Cruz’s Lovely World Premiere Hotel Desiderium At Arca

This is not a traditional review because we saw the world premiere of Nilo Cruz’s latest play Hotel Desiderium at its fifth sold-out performance Nov. 21 at Arca Images, that late because it was a very busy week of theater openings across the region. But you can’t have caught any future performances in the run because there aren’t any.

You Can’t Stop The Beat: Well, At Least Online In So. Florida

Trivia contests, master classes, solo performances, new play development online, lectures, podcast-like schmoozing interviews, requests for video audition, 24-hour theater projects, even soliciting subscriptions for specific dates. The ghost light may be lit across the South Florida theater scene, but nearly every troupe is aggressively keeping the genre’s profile inescapable.

Nilo Cruz’s Hurricane Swirls With Unbridled Passion, Superb Craft

The tempest dies down, but the emotional tumult rages on in Nilo Cruz’s superbly staged world premiere of Hurricane, getting a criminally brief run at Arca Images in Miami. Rarely do South Floridians see such a highly polished and boundlessly inventive alloy of words, sounds, movement and stage pictures as Cruz does here directing his work.
