The future of the 24-Hour Theatre Project – a popular fund-raiser that cemented the theater community’s solidarity – seemed endangered when its founders, the Amadeos, announced they would be leaving the state. Enter the Theatre Lab, which will present Project on May 1 with the Amadeos’ blessing.
A different season advance: Quietly, oh so quietly, the 2016-2017 theater season in South Florida is shaping up to be as notable for tidal growth, contraction, ebb and flow as it is for the actual productions scheduled.

Antonio and Katherine Amadeo, who separately and together championed cutting edge work through their Naked Stage company and who helped unite the local artistic community with their 24-Hour Theatre Project, plan to leave the state. Their departure ends their plans to open a new venue in West Palm Beach focused on exciting younger audiences about theater as an entertainment option.
2015 produced a wild variety of snapshots to paste in the theatrical scrapbooks: a male Dolly Levi, a homicidal dimwit slicing carrots, a kidnapper forcing her captives to learn nonsense, a tsunami engulfing a Japanese village, a green-gunked survivor of toxic sludge singing love songs to his blind librarian girlfriend. You know, just another year for regional theater in South Florida.

Like a spinning gem with an infinite number of glittering facets, GableStage’s kaleidoscopic production of Constellations is an outstanding achievement in playwriting, direction and some of the most skilled acting you may see this season.
The Mousetrap at the Maltz is indeed a hoary old chestnut chock full of clichés which weren’t even new when it bowed in 1952. But director Peter Amster and his cast wisely don’t try to fight it or update it. Instead they embrace it with gusto and with hardly a post-modern wink other than playing up everyone’s suspicious facets with a gleeful melodramatic flair that is usually, but not always under control.

The Naked Stage, the 8-year-old company that has won acclaim and awards despite a tiny budget and no permanent home, is planning to open a 145-seat theater in a former antiques shop on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach in 6 to 12 months.
The Carbonell Awards will bestow its highest honors this month: Arsht Executive Vice President and Carbonell President oScott Shiller will receive the George Abbott Award, actress-director-producer-dancer-union leader-teacher Iris Acker will receive the Howard Kleinberg Award, and The Naked Stage troupe which created The 24-Hour Theatre Project will receive the Ruth Foreman Award.
Broward Stage Door’s courageously adult and resplendently lewd production of Cabaret ain’t your condo grandmother’s musical comedy. The only thing missing from this vision echoing the Sam Mendes revival is the nipple ring.
Here’s a look back at 2014 including a very subjective subjunctive reductive list of outstanding shows, performances and developments guaranteed to make someone unhappy they were not on the list. Take comfort in that there was so much good work that this is the crème de la crème de menthe.
