Just as Shakespeare’s poetry nestles surprisingly smoothly in the cadences of Caribbean characters, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s vision transplanting Antony and Cleopatra to 18th Century Haiti is less jarring and more intriguing than doubters might expect. An exotic vitality vibrates through this production of GableStage, Royal Shakespeare Company and Public Theater.

Follow Yellow Brick Road To Oz As It Takes Best From Film, Adds Webber’s Ingredients

There may be a lack of originality in this The Wizard of Oz with additional songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, but how can one top perfection? This is more of a wink to the marvelous magic of the original with some of its own ingredients tossed in. All in all, there’s plenty of reason to be off to see the Wizard.

Retooled Porgy And Bess Swells, Soars And Rips The Heartstrings

You know The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess at the Kravis Center is opera because you can’t understand a third of the lyrics even in English; you know it’s glorious opera because the swelling music and soaring voices make specific words unnecessary. This heart-stopping production reaffirms the genius of the Gershwin brothers and the 21st Century talents who reshaped it.

Elf The Musical Is Sweeter Family Fare Than The Film

If you’re suffering from the holiday blues, Elf isn’t going to pull you out of it. But if you can pry open your sugar-clogged aorta a smidge, this sweet peppy musical may generate a warm afterglow as Santa’s sleigh twinkles out of sight. But the tone is different than the 2003 film whose pre-sold title and basic premise the producers hope to cash in on.
