Avi Hoffman Takes on 5,000 Years Of War In Outre’s An Illiad

Playing a 5,000-year-old poet decrying humanity’s addiction to rage and violence, clothing his warning in a modern retelling of Homer’s epic tale of the Trojan War, this is not your grandma’s Avi Hoffman sitting here. But it is Hoffman sitting here in rehearsal, striving to learn 47 pages of dense script as the sole storyteller in Outré Theatre Company’s An Illiad slated to open Friday at The Studio at Mizner Park.

Mortality Is Funny As Well As Terrifying In Superb Absurdist Exit The King At Dramaworks

The word “hilarious” rarely applies to a bleak unblinking play about mortality, but Palm Beach Dramawork’s superb production of Eugene Ionesco’s Exit The King earns it, along with “profoundly thought-provoking” and other accolades. Simply, it ranks among the best work that the company has mounted in its 13 seasons.

Kravis’ Jekyll & Hyde Is More Rock n’ Roll Extravaganza Than Musical Theater

Road show producers have reconceived Frank Wildhorn’s legitimate musical Jekyll & Hyde into an all out American Idol rock ’n’roll extravaganza complete with supposedly Edwardian characters indulging in raging melisma and ear-splitting screeches. Nothing and no one in this production is moving or thought-provoking, but then that’s not the goal. And Maroulis isn’t half bad and Deborah Cox is terrific.
