A Musical Beauty ‘Pageant’ Like None You’ve Seen – Probably
The musical comedy Pageant at Island City Stage delivers a lush array of talented contestants in carefully coifed wigs and gowns — except they’re all men.
True, there’s not particularly buff former factory workers stripping down to G-strings, pumping and grinding in a ladies’ bar, but The Full Monty is the kind of pleasant mainstream musical that folks used to complain wasn’t being made anymore.
The musical comedy Pageant at Island City Stage delivers a lush array of talented contestants in carefully coifed wigs and gowns — except they’re all men.
Hair never was and isn’t now accurate reportage on the 1968 counter-culture,any more than Oklahoma was a faithful account of homesteading on the eve of statehood. But what the raw material got right and MNM Productions’ engaging edition gets right at the Kravis Center is the infectious vitality, youthful optimism and the genuine sense of communal love.
As far as large-scale Broadway musicals, Ragtime stands as Actors’ finest mainstream work ever, as accessible and satisfying as it is passionate and thoughtful. Anyone who cares about musical theater, or theater in general, should make a special effort to see this production.
