Critics and award judges have been talking about it for weeks: The sheer amount of high quality work has made evaluating the last 12 months unusually challenging, but also an opportunity to remember one of the most rewarding calendar years in recent memory. So here’s a supremely subjective stab by all three critics here at Florida Theater On Stage at recognizing the shows and performances that stood out from a pack of productions.
It almost should go without saying that the rock ’n’ roll blisters the paint off the walls of Actors’ Playhouse’s balcony theater in its thoroughly satisfying edition of Million Dollar Quartet.

You know, just another year for regional theater in South Florida.
Actors Playhouse’s production of The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge has a talented cast working hard under the direction of David Arisco, but good grief, what a waste of the resources of Mark Brown’s lame script. For one hours and forty minutes (including intermission), the audiences waits and waits for a single new riff in the Scrooge story, even a shred of logic explaining Brown’s basic premise.
In Christopher Demos-Brown’s shattering world premiere Stripped at Zoetic Stage, the audience is faced with a complex child custody case is forced to judge past the surface facets of a case in which it will be impossible to “do no harm.”
Slow Burn Theatre Company’s The Marvelous Wonderettes at the Broward Center is a sweet and tasty cotton candy confection of girl group standards from 1950s and 1960s delivered by four terrific actress-comedienne-singers.
