Watching The Familiar Story of Your Life Retold in Middletown

Middletown is a charming, comfortable evening at Actors Playhouse, sitting around a living room with middle-class couples (Loretta Swit, Didi Conn, Adrian Zmed, Donny Most) telling you familiar stories of their lives and yours. Intentionally told with no props, scenery and the cast reading from scripts on music stands, the simplicity is intentional, perhaps to underscore the universality of the touchstones being discussed.

Hilarious, Moving ‘Fuacata’ Returns Even More Relevant

Fuácata! has been tweaked by star Elena Maria Garcia and director Stuart Meltzer with references to non-binary, Uber and “draining the swamp.” But the exuberantly hilarious and moving work from 2017 already had elements echoing the subsequent rise of #MeToo, hardening of ingrained bigotry, explosion of immigration crises, renewed uproar over Cuba and other topics. This production at Actors’ Playhouse is cause for celebration.

Wick and Actors Playhouse Hold 1st Shows Inside Auditoriums

The Wick Theatre and Actors’ Playhouse have scheduled their first productions inside their main auditoriums. The Wick opens this weekend with a John Denver tribute concert and the Playhouse offers the family musical Madeleine’s Christmas at the end of the month.

Fight It If You Want, Mamma Mia! Still Indomitably Infectious

Mamma Mia! is another one of those Great Continental Divides in theater: you either love it – or you hate yourself for standing up and clapping along in the final mega-mix medley of infectious earwigs. As proven by Actors’ Playhouse’s full-out production, the damn thing can be a lot of good ol’ fun if you let yourself enjoy it.
