The Broward Stage Door Theatre production of the 1970 musical The Rothschilds, about the famed family’s rise from the German ghetto to become on the wealthiest families in the world, is a reasonably diverting afternoon of theater worth a look at a show rarely produced, but its ultimate potential seems just a few steps out of reach.
For a century, August Strindberg’s tragedy Miss Julie has been interpreted as a seesaw of power exercised through class and sexual politics. But in Naked Stage’s operatic production, as lives lie in ruins, everyone ultimately is revealed a slave, never a master, when they toy with those three elements.
The snowbirds have gone home, but South Florida theater never seems to go dark these days. This year-round trend has never been clearer than right now with a calendar is jammed with an overwhelming cornucopia of options over the next two or three weeks. Here’s an incomplete overview:
There’s a reason, as seen in Broward Stage Door’s revival, that Beau Jest has survived for so long. . Despite a sentimental mechanical finale and humor so vaudevillian you can hear the rim shots, James Sherman’s may be script may be formulaic but it’s also truly funny, especially when enhanced by the skills of star Matthew William Chizever and director Michael Leeds.
With the upfront caveat that we saw an early preview, Broward Stage Door’s Damn Yankees is a base hit but no triple. The cast needs to pitch with a little more spin on the ball, even with talent in the dugout plus a delightful score that qualifies as a solid run batted in.
In theater, that most mutable and evolving art form, the passage of time is the forgotten factor in what the audiences see. So while having critics review a show opening night is unavoidable, even necessary, it’s also problematic. What a patron sees a week or three later in run may not be what the opening night audience saw.
In the case of GableStage’s production of the message comedy about sexual politics, Venus In Fur, the only thing to be certain of is the stunning performance by Betsy Graver.
The Turn of the Screw, Henry James’ psychological thriller gets a superbly accomplished production as The Naked Stage’s first outing in almost two years featuring flawless performances by Katherine Amadeo and Matthew William Chizever, and director Margaret M. Ledford deftly creating a world of half-shadows and whispers.
So much for the myth of the summer doldrums…. Besides recent and imminent openings at Mad Cat, Palm Beach Dramaworks, GableStage, Actors Playhouse, the XXVII International Hispanic Theatre Festival, three shows at the Stage Door venues, not to mention the Arsht’s Donkey Show, here’s some news and notes you might not have heard about regarding Naked Stage, Island City Stage, Lake Worth Playhouse, David Kwiat and PPTOPA.
Sometimes, when the material is strong enough, success means just getting out of its way. For the most part, that’s what a cast of strong singers and the director do to make Broward Stage Door’s Little Shop of Horrors a smile-inducing entertainment.
