GableStage Opens Commissions For Brand-New Online Works

GableStage is coping with the death of Joseph Adler plus the shuttering of live performances, but it has started new initiative meant to originate new material and support artists financially. Engage@GableStage is commissioning original world premieres for online works that mirror the theater’s vein of thought-provoking stories. Proposals/applications for the grants will be accepted through June 12.

Breaking News: Broward To Allow Some Theaters To Reopen

Theaters and performing arts venues in Broward County can apply for permission to reopen as early as June 15 – decided case by case based on meeting undisclosed guidelines. Also, the county estimated $14.2 million in losses for non-profits arts organizations for March and April. The county also announced $428,000 in grants given for operational expenses.

Steinberg /ATCA and Osborn New Play Award Winners Named

Playwright E.M. Lewis is the 2020 recipient of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg / American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award. The Steinberg/ATCA Award, which comes with a $25,000 prize, recognizes playwrights for the best scripts that premiered professionally outside New York City during 2019.

Miami-Dade Arts Lost $22.8 Million Through March

Already, the COVID-19 pandemic has cost the Miami-Dade arts and culture world an estimated $22.9 million and affected 1,700 jobs just through the end of March, according to the first figures from an ongoing survey by the county Department of Cultural Affairs.

Joseph Adler, Transformative Titan And Champion Of South Florida Theater, Dies At 79

Joseph Adler, a titan who helped transform South Florida’s cultural landscape by mounting unblinking, dynamic work and aggressively championing local artists, died Thursday. Passionate and outspoken, curmudgeonly and supportive, gruff and loving, but unassailably a skilled artist, Adler had been a force of nature as producing artistic director of GableStage since 1998.
