Marquee Theater Company is still an evolving troupe. but it’s a shame that this production of Thoroughly Modern Millie isn’t Carbonell Award eligible – many elements would have given other companies a run for their money at next winter’s deliberations.

But there’s no ambivalence in this company’s enthusiasm and strong performances of Ben Sandomir in the title roles and, Alexandria Lugo as Lucy, the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold and vocal-chords-of-steel.
Marquee Theater Company’s production of Jason Robert Brown’s Songs For A New World slices open the studied flat affect of the “Whatever” generation to expose inner lives as vibrant, complex and tumultuous as that of any group before them.
South Florida theaters still mount familiar warhorses, but the 2015-2016 season is proof that companies realize the future of theater is to attract pre-retirement audiences with shows steaming fresh out of Manhattan, edgy intellectually challenging works, imaginative takes on familiar titles, regional premieres of shows you only read about in The New York Times over the past few years and some shows you have never heard of, period.
