Every couple of years, Actors’ Playhouse – home of the mainstream musical –mounts an edgy modern work that nourishes the creative soul of the theater’s more adventurous patrons like next to normal and Floyd Collins. Add to that list the cult rock opera Murder Ballad that mixes love, lust, loss, passion, fury, pain and violence in a fatal triangle as old as Mankind but as current as last week’s tabloid.
Some patrons might be a tad uncomfortable at Murder Ballad at Actors Playhouse. After all, a lovesick swain likely will pour his heart out while standing on a chair a few inches away from an audience member’s face. A ticket buyer may find herself within spitting distance of a sweaty couple trying to kill each other.
Zoetic Stage director Stuart Meltzer and a superb collection of actors and designers have scored, forgive me, a bull’s eye with this production of Assassins. . Any Stephen Sondheim fan understands that his work is not everyone’s cup of saltpeter. But for those who seek intelligent, thought-provoking musical theater, there are few pieces as superb as this.

To summarize The Lion in Winter as a drama about a dysfunctional family is to facilely devalue this examination of just how base the human animal can be in the grip of power and ambition. Director William Hayes and a fine cast make the most of the acerbic gallows humor in Palm Beach Dramaworks’ bravura production, but they also build Goldman’s underlying case for the less than laudable aspects of our nature.
